Andorra Telecom launches an anti-hacking service to protect companies and institutions
Andorra Telecom's Director of Customer Relations, Josep Vilana, presented a new security product at a press conference on Monday aimed at protecting companies and institutes against distributed denial-of-service attacks, or DDoS.
This type of hacking made headlines last summer, in the wake of several attacks against a number of Andorran servers. The perpetrators, who control hundreds or thousands of infected machines and devices, set out to saturate Internet services by generating an avalanche of traffic that cannot be handled by the server or portal in question, therefore rendering it unable to provide normal services.
The hackers' main motive tends to be economic, by means of blackmail, but there also are cases of industrial sabotage or hacktivism, which involve ideologically-based campaigns.
The AntiDDoS service from Andorra Telecom comes in two different versions, according to the customer's degree of exposure. The Business service is largely aimed at broadband Internet services of up to 300 Mbps, which are mostly web portals.
The Premium service is aimed at large companies whose services are exposed to the Internet with larger bandwidths, and for whom an attack on their service would entail economic and/or reputational damage.
In both cases, the products include a monitoring service, attack detection and the mitigation of such attacks.
The AntiDDoS service is the first in a series of products directly related to security that the company is planning to launch in 2017 and 2018. The new products also represent a new channel of revenue diversification for Andorra Telecom, as well as ensuring companies and individuals have a more secure Internet connection.
Josep Vilana underscored the lengthy experience of the telecommunications operator's technicians and the systems used to protect the Andorran network, which have been essential to establishing the definition of the service. He likewise explained that the operator has made a significant investment in the last few years in matters of security and prevention against cybercrime.
