Schools’ fibre optic broadband internet speed is ten times faster

The network is used by 11,000 students and 1,820 teachers from the three educational stages
The Government and Andorra Telecom have improved the capacity and speed of the National Education Network of Andorra (XENA in its Catalan initials), which connects a total of 35 schools in the country and guarantees their Internet connection.

The main change has been to increase the fibre optic broadband line speed from 1Gb (Gbps) to 10Gb per second. To increase the speed, it was necessary to update the Internet connection network hardware which used internet network routers and last generation filters and firewalls.

The other big change has been increasing the speed of Xena access lines from 100 Megabits (Mpbs) to 1Gb per second at the seven schools with the most traffic. These are Andorra the secondary schools in Santa Coloma, Encamp and Ordino, the Escola Andorrana Primary School in Santa Coloma, the Lycée Compte de Foix, the Aixovall Training College and the Andorra Baccalaureate School. What is more, both Andorra Telecom's and the Xena network's hardware has been updated.

In the rest of schools, the line's capacity has also seen a threefold increase, from 100 Mbps to 300 Mbps. Although the network was adequate in these schools, it was expanded in anticipation of the on-going increase in demands on the Internet services in schools.

Eric Jover, the Andorran Minister of Higher Education and Andorra Telecom's Chief Executive Officer, Jordi Nadal, visited the Aixovall Professional Training College this morning to find out the opinions of teachers and students and to discover the new network's features first hand.

The minister emphasised that “it's very important that lines of communication keep up with the growing demand for Internet connections, because the educational technology services provided to the whole educational community in Andorra by the Ministry are becoming increasingly cloud based.” He added, “with this increase in speed, we are once again top of the league table in educational networks with regard to our neighbouring countries”.

Andorra Telecom's Chief Executive Officer of also stressed that the use of new technologies and connectivity have become an essential part of our how we work. He said, “Andorra Telecom has a public responsibility to promote the introduction of ICT in society in general public and, in particular, for students. The XENA network is not just a tool for promoting access to the Internet in educational institutions, it is also a channel for developing communication and exchange between different schools and educational stages.” The National Education Network of Andorra (XENA) is an Intranet service with total of 23 access points at educational institutions and an access point at the Ministry CPD, located in Aixovall. This guarantees the connection between the schools and all those who form part of the educational community, along with Internet.

The network is used by 11,000 students and 1,820 teachers from the three educational stages.

The Ministry of Higher Education’s technology park has 2,486 desktop computers and wireless devices, which are connected to the XENA Wi-Fi network during school hours on a daily basis.
