Record enrolment in the fifth instalment of the Andorra Telecom WRO competition

A total of 27 teams, comprising about eighty young people, will participate in the robotics competition, now involving teams from Seu d’Urgell.
The fifth edition of the World Robotic Olympiad (WRO), the competition organised in our country by Andorra Telecom, has gone international, welcoming ten teams from La Seu d’Urgell in addition to the seventeen from Andorra. The large number of participants, a record for the Andorran event, is a response to the spectacular growth of the hobby of robotics among young people.

On 20 June, the Aixovall Vocational Training Centre will host the educational robotics competition, which creatively encourages a knowledge of robotics among children with the aim of promoting their interest in technology and engineering.

The Andorran contest groups the regular competition’s independent challenges into five categories: WeDo (from 6 to 10 years old), Star (from 7 to 12 years old), Elementary (from 7 to 12 years old), Rookie (from 13 to 15 years old), and Junior (from 13 to 15 years old). The students, with the guidance of a mentor and divided into groups, need to build and program an innovative robot to overcome a challenge proposed by the organisation.

On Tuesday, Joan Rovira, a coach for the Andorran teams, and Inés Martí, the Head of Andorra Telecom Events, presented the fifth WRO, the primary focus of which is smart transport. They were accompanied in the presentation by three of the young participants in the competition: brother and sister Elena and Jaume Torres, and Maiana Rovira.

This sector is developing important automations, such as driving without human intervention by means of robotic control, changes intended to help reduce accidents, avoid traffic jams, and decrease the amount of space needed for driving and parking. The challenge this year is to build a robot that can act as a truly autonomous vehicle for transporting passengers from a starting point to a target area.

Inés Martí highlighted the significant number of Andorran teams enrolled, “which represents a quantum leap over the previous year, when only six teams participated”. Martí expressed her conviction that “we are beginning to see the results of a firm commitment not only on the part of Andorra Telecom, but also from the educational systems in the country, which have been including robotics in their academic curricula and extracurricular activities, as well as families, who are more receptive to the idea of their children taking part in such activities”. For the Head of Andorran Telecom Events, the most important thing “is for everyone to have a good time on the 20th, and for the competition to be a festive event”. Martí also added that “the incorporation of girls into these activities is a challenge for everyone”.

Joan Rovira, coach for the Andorran teams, highlighted “the progress being made by the Andorran teams, who are beginning to stand out in certain international events,” noting “the importance of being able to compare ourselves with the teams from La Seu d'Urgell, which is a very positive thing for our teams.” The coach expressed his confidence in his teams, and pointed out that, despite the normal competition within a tournament, “the values of the World Robot Olympiad always prevail”.

The Andorran competition is part of the WRO’s international calendar. The first-place winners of the WeDo, Star, Elementary, and Junior categories in the competition organised by Andorra Telecom will win a place in the finale, which will be held this year on September 14th and 15th in the Catalan town of Platja d'Aro. The international finale will be held between November 8th and 10th in Györ (Hungary).

The competition, which will be held at 5:00 pm on June 20th at the Aixovall vocational training centre, is open to everyone.

Andorra Telecom supports the promotion of robotics and innovation among children and adolescents in the country by means of the Micro First Lego League competitions, which bring together teams from different schools, and the WRO, which brings together robotics clubs.
