The Andorran World Robot Olympiad (WRO) event will be held at the Loopa club this Tuesday and Thursday, in a format adapted to ensure compliance with the social distancing measures required to prevent the spread of COVID-19. The organisation has chosen to spread the competition over two days instead of one, with fewer teams and no audience.

“We felt we needed to go ahead with this event, despite current limitations and social distancing regulations, because we want to recognise the efforts made by the children who’ve continued to work in robotics in spite of lockdown, to give them an opportunity to demonstrate the knowledge they’ve acquired and share it with other children”, said Inés Martí, Head of Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) at Andorra Telecom.

Even though the Andorran event opened its doors to clubs in Catalonia last year, only participants from within the country will be able to take part in this year’s competition. A total of four teams will participate in the competition, divided into three categories: Stars (from 7 to 12 years old), Elementary (from 8 to 12 years old) and Junior (from 13 to 16 years old).

This year's competition revolves around climate change. Participants will have to prepare their robots to overcome challenges based on the risks arising from increasingly common extreme weather events.
The winners of the Andorran event will have the opportunity to take part in the final of the Spanish Championship, on dates yet to be confirmed. However, the WRO Association has decided to suspend the international final due to the coronavirus pandemic.
