A total of 837 schoolchildren participate by picking up litter as part of the European 'Clean Up Day' campaign

The ministers of the Environment, Agriculture and Sustainability, Silvia Calvó, and of Education and Higher Education, Ester Vilarrubla, together with the councillor of the Encamp community, Xavier Benedicte, and the CEO of Andorra Telecom, Jordi Nadal, were accompanied this morning by students from the Andorran School of Kindergarten and Primary Education and the French School of Pas de la Casa in collecting litter and cleaning up the natural spaces around the river in Encamp village.
The action is part of the European 'Clean Up Day' campaign and is a joint action throughout Europe to raise awareness about the amount of waste that is illegally dumped in natural spaces.

"The initiative helps children gain awareness of the importance of caring for their natural environment and not littering," said Minister Calvó. She also explained that although there is still a significant amount of litter in natural spaces, it is declining year after year. Ms Vilarrubla explained that "today's activity will surely give them much more information than the activities that can be done at school because the images impact them directly". In fact, all the schools in the Principality are working on projects associated with the environment and the students' awareness is also essential as a means of spurring change in the rest of the family.

In this year's edition, 837 schoolchildren from twelve schools in the country's three education systems are taking part, a figure slightly higher than that achieved last year. As in previous editions, this year students were able to collect all kinds of waste, such as cans, paper, metal or even tyres.

As well as students from Andorran schools and French students from Pas de la Casa, students in Canillo helped clean up their parish in Camí de Prats; the EAMPE of Encamp spread out to several points of their parish; the French school in Encamp cleaned up road and pathways in Mojacar, the mill and the gondola; the French school in Ordino went to the fields next to the Hotel Gaspà; the French school of Santa Coloma cleaned up the roadways near the school; the Janer School took on the area around the school and nearby urban areas; the Lycée Compte de Foix in the Rec de l'Obac of Andorra la Vella and the Vocational Training Centre did a clean-up along the road that links the Coll de Jou, Auvinyà and Aixovall. The EASE Santa Coloma and Sant Ermengol schools had to postpone the activity due to the poor weather on Friday afternoon.

As a precautionary measure in view of the exceptional situation caused by COVID-19, this year's campaign, initially planned from 8th to 10th May, was postponed pending a new date at the European level. The campaign is being held in the country for the sixth time by the Department of the Environment and Sustainability, through Sustainable Andorra, and within the framework of the Green School project.

For the second year in a row, Andorra Telecom participated in the event with the production of commemorative T-shirts and the purchase of gloves. The company has recently promoted initiatives such as the digitalisation of much of its internal procedures and the application of the electronic signature for commercial use, thus eliminating the use of paper.
