The Government measures noise levels using Andorra Telecom's Internet of Things network
We are launching a joint pilot trial project involving on-going, real-time monitoring of noise pollution in Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany
The Ministry of Environment and Sustainability will use the Andorra Telecom Smart device network, or Internet of Things (IoT), to measure levels of noise pollution in the country on a permanent basis. The project will be launched next week, with a pilot trial project involving two sensors installed in Andorra la Vella and Escaldes-Engordany which will transmit data regarding the intensity of noise levels every 15 minutes.
The initiative was presented on Thursday at a press conference by Marc Rossell, Director-General of Environment and Sustainability of the Andorran Government and Cesar Marquina the Director of Andorra Telecom’s Digital Office.
Up to now the Department of Environment and Sustainability has used Class 1 acoustic sensors, providing improved data on the country’s acoustic environmental quality using measurements of a temporary nature. The LoRa IoT network we have installed, which has coverage throughout the city centre, will lead to reductions in the cost of connection and maintenance of acoustic sensors, based on real-time information.
Rossell highlighted the fact that this project is part of the 2017-2030 Atmospheric Environment Strategy, which aims to extend the present acoustic surveillance network using automatic sensors. These data allow acoustic sensitivity maps to be created, which will be the basis for determining action, prevention, information and awareness-raising programmes about maximum acoustic levels in the country.
Cesar Marquina emphasised to the media that Smart devices will change management models in cities and countries. "The LoRa network allows sensors with a high level of independence to send data in real time and this information serves as the basis for monitoring and decision-making by the authorities". This new technology has the great advantage of providing cost reductions that put it “within the reach of more and more public agencies and businesses".
The two sensors chosen are powered in different ways. One uses electricity and the other solar power, to deduce at which locations which technology other may be used in the future. The data generated by the sensors enables the automatic creation of reports and the setting up of alarms.
Andorra Telecom is part of the LoRa Alliance™ Association, which brings together more than 500 international companies, and whose purpose is to promote the large-scale deployment of IoT, and of the LoRa standard in particular.
