Andorra Telecom users connect more from overseas

Data roaming consumption increases by 300 per cent during the first six months of 2018
Andorra Telecom customers are using the Internet more and more when they travel. The data for the first half of the year reflect both the increase in the number of customers who have connected from abroad via their mobile phones and the rise in the number of downloads. In other words, more people are using it for longer.

22.9 million megawatts were consumed during the first six months of the year, representing an increase of 304% over the same period of 2017, when consumption stood at 5.6 million. As for users, 16% of Andorra Telecom customers abroad went online in the first half of 2016 while, in 2018, the number increased by eleven percentage points to 27%.

The reasons for the evolution can be found in Andorra Telecom’s new policy of promoting connectivity. The creation of daily roaming passes, allowing the consumption of 100 megabytes, and the inclusion of roaming in the general passes explain users’ changing habits.

“Before, many of our customers disabled their mobile data whenever they left the country. Now users leave their data on and use their phones with peace of mind, especially in Spain, France and Portugal”, highlighted Carles Casadevall, Director of International Relations and Strategic Negotiations of Andorra Telecom.

It is important to recall that Pass 35 allows the use of 3 gigabytes per month in neighbouring countries and Portugal, Pass 59 provides 5 gigabytes and Pass 79 provides 8 gigabytes. As for Pass 99, the coverage extends throughout the European Union and the United States, with a maximum consumption of 10 gigabytes.

As for the daily roaming pass, it covers a total of 40 European countries and the United States. Carles Casadevall insisted that users need to know exactly what package they have subscribed to, the capacity allowed and the countries covered to avoid any misunderstandings. “We are negotiating with a large number of international operators. Our purpose is to obtain discounts that we can transfer to our customers, so that they can connect from more countries at the best price, but it is not an immediate process”, he stressed.

There has also been an increase in the number of telephone calls made from abroad, but it is less significant than the data increase. During the first six months of the year roaming call minutes totalled 1.7 million, 23.7% more than the previous year.

For mobile communication there is also a specific pass that provides 60 minutes of calls made and received from abroad for 1.50 euros.
