New record for mobile phones connected to the Andorran network

This past 30th December, the number of connected devices reached 121,000
Andorra Telecom's mobile telephone network has never had so many simultaneously connected devices. The large influx of tourists over the recent Christmas holidays surpassed all records in terms of mobile telephony.

On 30th December, around 5 pm, a new record was set with a total of 121,255 mobile phones connected to the network, which represents an increase of 4% over the previous record set on 6th December 2010, at the beginning of the long weekend in celebration of the Immaculate Conception, when the figure of 116,677 connected devices was reached.

Another feature of the Christmas festivities is that the number of foreign telephones far exceeded that of Andorrans. Specifically, this occurred over four consecutive days of the Christmas holidays.

On the same date, the 30th, roamers accounted for 54.4% of connected devices, while on the 29th, topping out at 120,393 phones, foreigners accounted for 54.2%. On 28th and 31st December, the figure stood at 50.7% and 50.4%, respectively.

The spokesperson for Andorra Telecom, Carles Casadevall, took advantage of this data to stress the need for tourist-oriented countries to have a network sized not only for their customers but also for the significant number of visitors they receive at year's end. "We must have facilities prepared to handle not just the 74,000 inhabitants but 8 million visitors a year. This forces us, in the case of mobile telephony, to have antennas with twice the capacity of what we would need if they only had to cater for the customers of Andorra Telecom”. Casadevall noted that it was precisely the roaming charges paid by foreign carriers which make it possible to finance the network.

The Christmas holidays also brought in record mobile data consumption. Thus, a total of 66.62 TB was consumed, which represents an increase of 46% over the same period the previous year, which came to 45.49 TB. The day with the highest consumption was 1 January, with 4.4 TB, well above the 2.8TB in 2018.

French tourists are the ones who consume the most data, 19% of the total. This is explained by the fact that French carriers have included Andorra in the European space, which means their customers do not have to pay any roaming fees while in Andorra. The highest traffic occurs in Vall d'Orient and is led by Pas de la Casa, Soldeu and El Tarter. As for Spanish tourists, data consumption stood at 5%.
